Foundations for Counseling Ministry

Minister to the hurting. Heal the broken. Restore the lost.

Training Overview

The YWAM Foundations for Counseling Ministry (FCM) will expose you to the Biblical processes of healing and restoration of the spirit and soul. This course is designed to be a time of deep personal growth and give foundational preparation for future ministry with people. Many have testified to life-changing experiences during this school as they met God in deeper ways.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.”
2 Corinthians 5:17-18

The Purpose of FCM is…

to be able to apply God’s truth at heart level in a way that enables change and transformation through:

  • Imparting vision to take steps towards wholeness and empower others to do the same.
  • Personal development in restoring identity, healing wounds, discovering gifts, and growing in relational skills.
  • Skill development in relational boundaries, utilizing active listening, speaking the truth in love, praying with and for people.
  • Understanding the work of the cross and Holy Spirit in redemption, Christian counseling, and cross-cultural counseling.
  • Ministry development in communicating truth in a clear, understandable way; excellence in written and oral communication; and presenting quality material.

Lecture Phase

Learn how to effectively help and empower.

The 12-week lecture phase of the YWAM Foundations for Counseling Ministry includes various methods of learning for your own development to equip you for future counseling ministry. This happens through formal lectures, discussions, workshops, small group interactions, personal study, and one to one feedback opportunities.

Living together in community with students and staff provides opportunity for application of what has been learned. Biblical counseling skills will be modeled by staff and visiting teachers.

Active Listening

Sometimes the greatest gift we can give someone is the opportunity to be heard.

In James 1:19, we are challenged to be quick to listen and slow to speak. Active listening is a powerful tool that can effectively diffuse anger and resolve conflicts. Come and learn how to listen in a way that empowers people to name their hurts, strengths, struggles, and processes.

Active listening creates an environment that allows people to process their full range of emotions, to feel heard, and to choose their own decisions for holistic transformation. This practical method can be applied in any context that involves any sort of connection with people.

The Divine Plumbline

God is wise and has created the world with certain structures that run smoothly when we are aligned with His purposes. We do not live up to these standards—so much so that sometimes we don’t even know what is right.

In His grace, He provides a point of reference for us to come back. Based on the teaching developed by Dr. Bruce Thompson, you will get the opportunity to learn the ways individuals, communities, and cultures deviate from God’s plan and then take active steps in returning to Him.

Want to know a not-so-secret secret? Switzerland is beautiful and super close to epic cities and nations. Grab some friends and train through Europe, Easyjet to Greece for an ice cream, ski on the Alps, tour a chocolate factory, explore a forest, visit a museum, or taste a delicious cheese fondue.

You are not alone. Process teachings and personal discoveries, laugh and cry, and share stories with some of your classmates in designated small group times.

1 On 1 Discipleship

1 On 1 Discipleship

You are on a unique journey, and we want to champion you. Meet one on one with a staff member to process the week, ask questions, receive prayer, and more.

We are called to pray without ceasing. Practice hearing what’s on God’s heart and standing in the gap for nations, communities, crises, people groups, and more as you regularly pray in intercession groups.

Apply your training where it’s needed most.

The outreach phase of the YWAM Foundations for Counseling Ministry will be five weeks in length. This is an important time for your knowledge, skills, and character growth to be put into practice in a cross-cultural ministry context. Opportunities will be given to teach and to counsel. The outreach will focus on groups and individuals where using your unique training in listening and discernment can bless and empower.

Additionally, you will understand how to live a renewed lifestyle and to learn to work in a team. With your outreach team, you will have time to practice intercession, spiritual warfare, and cross-cultural understanding.
