Training Overview

Language is an essential medium to communicate with people. With approximately 339 million English speakers spanning 106 nations, communicating in English is a powerful tool to share Jesus with the world. Learning a new language can be difficult and requires vulnerability. In English Learning for Missions (ELM), we desire to create a safe place for you to learn, practice, and use language skills to connect with people.

Purpose of ELM

To offer English-language training that will equip students with effective communication skills and empower them to be further released into their potential.
To recognize the ability to speak, write, hear, and understand English as a tool for The Kingdom of God and missions.
To give students an opportunity to experience a multicultural environment and interact in English with people from around the world.
To experience spiritual growth and knowing God more intimately through the process of learning language.
To encourage students to pursue a DTS or further training inside or outside of YWAM.

The English Learning for Missions course will help you learn and improve your English language skills with an emphasis on conversational English.

Learn in a Christian missions–focused environment and be equipped in the area of basic English language competency for future training and ministry. The ELM is intended to give confidence and fluency to students who want to share their faith in the English language.

Special Trips

Enjoy some of the unique treasures of Switzerland during the English Learning for Missions course. We will take several trips within Switzerland to museums and other places of interest. The goal of these trips is to experience more of this nation while practicing English.

Communicate in Community

We provide a unique environment for you to learn English. You will not just be learning in a classroom but in an international community. Benefits include being able to practice English with various international accents. You can learn about other cultures through formal learning and informal conversations. You can expand your mission’s reach by practicing how to share the gospel and pray in English. This training also prepares you to dive deeper into English mission courses.

Course Content

English lessons five days a week for a total of 15-20 hours a week with teachers who will help you help improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills
Self-directed study in the language lab using online resources
One-on-one language tutoring
Regular Bible reading, study, and meditation in English
Learn how to pray and lead intercession in English
Share your testimony and God’s word in English
Engagement with the base community through practical ministry, worship and, community meetings
Local outreach to the community and ministry partnership with local churches

ELM Tutoring Adventure Awaits... Community Fun 1 On 1 Discipleship

ELM TUTORING

Every week you have the great opportunity to have 1.5 hours of one on one tutoring with a native English speaker. At the beginning of the school, you will be assigned a tutor who will help you learn English for the whole ELM. This is a time for you to ask questions from what you learned inside or outside of class. Your tutor will come prepared with some work for you, but we also ask that you come prepared with any questions you have about English. This is usually one of the most enjoyable times of learning in ELM, and we are happy to offer you this great service.

Want to know a not-so-secret secret? Switzerland is beautiful and super close to epic cities and nations. Grab some friends and train through Europe, Easyjet to Greece for an ice cream, ski on the Alps, tour a chocolate factory, explore a forest, visit a museum, or taste a delicious cheese fondue.

COMMUNITY FUN

Be ready to show off your best beatbox or shred the air guitar with your friends for cafe night. Enjoy special games and meals for Swiss night and seasonal festivities such as Lunar New Year or Thanksgiving. As a community, we have the joy of gathering for times of worship, teaching and celebration.
