A big part of my journey has been to be stretched and often getting a friendly tug out of my comfort zone. To almost everyone, this sounds awful. But, GUYS! It’s SO GOOD! Not only do you get to step out in faith in times like these, but you will also be so stoked in the end knowing you threw down the walls of your perfectly boxed in life.
One thing God really showed me while abroad was that life is way more exciting when you just YALLA through life. (Yalla means ‘let’s go’ in Arabic) When you yalla through life with God, you’re like frolicking through a beautifully bloomed field of flowers with your best friend, blindfolded, but your best friend is walking you through it. You trust your best friend, so you have no problem just going for it. Going for it all! But that doesn’t mean you’re going to wander off without them.
See, God is walking us through life. Well, I like to think He’d rather frolic through floral fields with us, but someone has to steer the ship, y’know? But that’s the point; He’s going with us. WITH US. I can’t stress that enough, (Do yourself a favor and read With by Skye Jethani –it’s life changing). But He also won’t demand us to do anything we don’t want to do. If you don’t want to step over that rock in front of you, don’t. You can go around it, too. But for me, it’s easier to listen to what God wants me to do, and trust that He knows best. And you know the best part? HE DOES KNOW BEST! He who created you wants to lead you down the best path in life possible. He is like a father looking out for his child.
“TRUST IN THE LORD WITH ALL YOUR HEART AND LEAN NOT ON YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING. IN ALL YOUR WAYS ACKNOWLEDGE HIM AND HE WILL DIRECT YOUR PATH.” PROV. 3:5-6
So my point: I lived 21 years of my life being comfortable. Never doing anything wild, or even out of the norm. I thought it was fine to study in university blindly and unhappily. I thought a lot of things in my life were fine, but they were just comfortable. So when God called me to Switzerland, I almost didn’t want to go. But there was a gut feeling inside me that said go! And because I said yes & stepped out in faith with God, I’ve experienced things that I never would have before.
I could keep going with the list guys, but let me tell you, I take one look at those things and the Melanie 5 months ago would have been like “Yeah, I’d rather be home with my dogs, but have fun!” This is why I believe comfort can be overrated. With comfort, maybe you’ll never fully hear God’s voice saying GO! Or maybe when the rest of your friends are swimming in the Mediterranean, comfort keeps you from going in. Maybe you decide to do it anyway, and it turns out to change your life forever, knowing you can do so much more with God as your guide & the walls of your life broken down forever.
